“Discipleship in Exile: Two Witnesses to Win the World”

Rev. David Moody

 Prelude

Welcome

Introit: “We Have Come into His House”

Call to Worship: Ephesians 1:3-10 (NIV) 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

Hymn #255: “There is a Fountain”

Confession of Sin: (unison) As you have promised, give us your goodness in place of our wickedness. Silence all cruel slanderers and accusers, those who magnify our faults, and the devil. Do so now and whenever our consciences are worried. Judge us not by the evidence of the devil and by our own depressed conscience Take from our souls the heavy burden of all our sins, so that with clear, joyful, and sincere consciences we may endure and do all things and live and die fully confident of your mercy. Amen.

Confessing the Faith of the Church: Heidelberg Q & A #60 Q. How are you righteous before God? A. Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments, of never having kept any of them, and of still being inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without any merit of my own, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, and as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. —if only I accept this gift with a believing heart.

Hymn #253: “Hallelujah! What a Savior!”
